02 Application engineering

Applications

Oil-immersed transformer solutions matched to distribution, industrial and infrastructure project requirements.

01

Utility distribution networks

Step-down transformation at distribution substations and pole-to-ground transformation points, installed outdoors on the utility network. Natural-cooled oil-immersed construction keeps maintenance simple, and designs are aligned with the network operator’s technical requirements and the project EPC specification.

02

Commercial and mixed-use projects

Supply to commercial centers, mixed-use developments and public buildings that are fed from a utility MV ring or radial feeder. Outdoor or ground-level substation placement keeps heat and noise away from occupied areas and can be coordinated with the local network connection rules.

03

Mining, oil and gas, heavy industry

Power distribution for mines, process facilities and remote operations where long feeders, high ambient temperatures and continuous duty are expected. Robust tank construction and natural cooling reduce dependence on auxiliary equipment; final accessories follow the site specification.

Where to apply

  • Utility distribution networks
  • Distribution substations
  • Commercial and mixed-use developments
  • Infrastructure projects
  • Rural and peri-urban supply
  • Renewable energy projects

04 Construction and options

Technical resources and options

Typical configuration

Oil-filled welded steel tank with natural (ONAN) cooling through radiators or corrugated walls, dissipating losses without fans or pumps in normal distribution duty. Oil preservation: hermetically sealed or conservator-type arrangement with breather, oil-level indication and pressure-relief device, chosen by unit size, utility practice and site conditions.

Typical configuration

Core-and-coil active part with laminated silicon-steel core and insulated windings; core grade, conductor material and loss level follow the project loss specification.

Available option

Tapping arrangement: an off-circuit tap changer can be fitted, with tap positions, handle location and locking set by the network or project specification.

Available option

Bushings and terminals: porcelain or polymer HV and LV bushings, with open terminals or air-filled cable boxes depending on whether the unit connects to overhead lines or cables.

Available option

Protection and accessories: thermometer pocket, drain and sampling valves, earthing terminals and lifting provisions; Buchholz relay for conservator units, temperature indicators and MV fusing can be added. Test and documentation scope follow the applicable project technical specification.

Project engineering

Environmental engineering for variable outdoor exposure such as UV, rain, wind and coastal or industrial atmosphere depending on the site: coating system, gaskets, creepage distance and special oil such as natural ester are confirmed at project level.

Frequently asked questions

07

Frequently asked questions

When should Oil-Immersed Transformers be selected instead of Dry-Type Transformers?

Choose Oil-Immersed Transformers when the main duties are Utility distribution networks and Distribution substations; compare Dry-Type Transformers when Indoor substations and Commercial buildings better match the site. Final selection depends on the installation environment, network topology, fire or oil-containment requirements, rating and project specification.

How should the main configuration options for Oil-Immersed Transformers be selected?

Key choices include tap changer, bushings and terminations and protection and accessories. Select them according to the load profile, connection arrangement, installation environment, protection philosophy and utility/EPC specification; items shown as options or project engineering are not automatic standard equipment.

What installation conditions should be confirmed for Oil-Immersed Transformers projects?

Confirm ambient temperature, altitude, humidity, dust or corrosion exposure, indoor/outdoor location, ventilation, access and maintenance clearances. For applications such as Utility distribution networks, Distribution substations and Commercial and mixed-use developments, cooling, enclosure or insulation and protection should be reviewed during engineering rather than assuming one environmental class for every project.

Which standards and utility/project requirements should be confirmed?

Generic international market; standards and certification must be selected from the actual destination and project. Final losses, temperature rise, impedance, taps, accessories, tests and documentation must be checked against the applicable project specification; this page does not imply automatic approval by any authority.

What tests, drawings and documents should be agreed before the purchase order?

Confirm the applicable routine tests, general arrangement drawings, electrical datasheet, accessory list and inspection/test documents before manufacturing. Type or special tests, witnessing and additional reports should be specified when the project requires them. For Oil-Immersed Transformers, also confirm site-specific environmental and installation engineering.

What information does HKXR need to prepare a technical quotation?

Provide at least Rated capacity, Primary voltage, Secondary voltage, Phases, the selected tap changer / bushings and terminations options, installation conditions and the applicable project or utility specification. If available, attach the SLD, datasheet or tender specification so the configuration can be reviewed before quotation.
