02 Application engineering

Applications

Dry-type transformer solutions for indoor and application-specific electrical systems.

01

Metro, transport and infrastructure

Traction auxiliaries, station services, tunnels, airports and ports where space is limited and oil-filled equipment is restricted. Compact dry-type units can be installed in underground or enclosed electrical rooms, with fire-behaviour and ventilation requirements set by the project.

02

Renewable energy facilities

Auxiliary and local-distribution transformers for solar, wind and storage sites, and for plants that prefer oil-free equipment inside buildings or inverter stations. Dry-type construction suits enclosed installation, with cooling and protection confirmed to the site climate.

03

Data centers and critical facilities

Indoor power distribution for data centers and facilities with continuous-supply requirements. Oil-free construction avoids part of the fire-protection and maintenance restrictions of oil-filled units, while loading, ventilation and enclosure options are configured to the project load profile.

Where to apply

  • Indoor substations
  • Commercial buildings
  • Metro and transport facilities

04 Construction and options

Technical resources and options

Typical configuration

Cast resin insulation: high-voltage windings encapsulated in epoxy resin for oil-free operation in indoor substations, with insulation class F or H according to the design. Winding conductor and core: copper or aluminium windings and a low-loss silicon-steel core, selected for load profile, loss specification and the applicable project technical specification.

Typical configuration

Natural air (AN) cooling is the base arrangement; the electrical room must provide ventilation sized for the transformer losses and the ambient temperature.

Available option

Forced-air (AF) cooling with fans can be specified to increase short-term loading capability or offset high ambient temperature; the rating effect is confirmed in the project datasheet.

Available option

Winding temperature monitoring: PT100 sensors in the low-voltage windings with a temperature relay for alarm and trip functions, wired to the customer control system.

Available option

Enclosure and protection: open-type construction or a metal enclosure with an IP degree selected for the room, dust, access and safety requirements.

Project engineering

Environmental engineering for variable outdoor exposure such as UV, rain, wind and coastal or industrial atmosphere depending on the site: enhanced humidity and dust protection, altitude derating, special enclosure coatings and fiber-optic or other special monitoring are confirmed at project level.

Frequently asked questions

When should Dry-Type Transformers be selected instead of Oil-Immersed Transformers?

Choose Dry-Type Transformers when the main duties are Indoor substations and Commercial buildings; compare Oil-Immersed Transformers when Utility distribution networks and Distribution substations better match the site. Final selection depends on the installation environment, network topology, fire or oil-containment requirements, rating and project specification.

How should the main configuration options for Dry-Type Transformers be selected?

Key choices include AN/AF cooling, temperature monitoring and enclosure and protection. Select them according to the load profile, connection arrangement, installation environment, protection philosophy and utility/EPC specification; items shown as options or project engineering are not automatic standard equipment.

What installation conditions should be confirmed for Dry-Type Transformers projects?

Confirm ambient temperature, altitude, humidity, dust or corrosion exposure, indoor/outdoor location, ventilation, access and maintenance clearances. For applications such as Indoor substations, Commercial buildings and Metro and transport facilities, cooling, enclosure or insulation and protection should be reviewed during engineering rather than assuming one environmental class for every project.

Which standards and utility/project requirements should be confirmed?

Generic international market; standards and certification must be selected from the actual destination and project. Final losses, temperature rise, impedance, taps, accessories, tests and documentation must be checked against the applicable project specification; this page does not imply automatic approval by any authority.

What tests, drawings and documents should be agreed before the purchase order?

Confirm the applicable routine tests, general arrangement drawings, electrical datasheet, accessory list and inspection/test documents before manufacturing. Type or special tests, witnessing and additional reports should be specified when the project requires them. For Dry-Type Transformers, also confirm site-specific environmental and installation engineering.

What information does HKXR need to prepare a technical quotation?

Provide at least Rated capacity, Primary voltage, Secondary voltage, Phases, the selected AN/AF cooling / temperature monitoring options, installation conditions and the applicable project or utility specification. If available, attach the SLD, datasheet or tender specification so the configuration can be reviewed before quotation.
